Russia: Regime denies reports of Egypt troop deployment

"Russia has been accused of deploying special forces to a base in Egypt amid heightened fears over the country's deepening role in the conflict in Libya. But Russian government officials denied the deployment, claiming allegations were aimed at stirring up tensions. Intelligence claimed Moscow had deployed a 22-member unit and several drones to an airbase at Sidi Barrani just 60 miles from the Egypt-Libya border. And US officials [claimed] its troops had observed special forces at another Egyptian base farther east in Marsa Matrouh in early February. Diplomats claimed the move could be part of a bid to support Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar, following an attack by opposition forces on oil ports."
