“An overnight raid on a prison in Venezuela turned into a ‘massacre’ early Wednesday — with more than 30 inmates being killed by security forces, according to officials. The government sent a special forces team into the prison, located in the southern jungle state of Amazonas, at around midnight to deal with a number of violent gangs that reportedly overtook the understaffed facility several weeks ago. ‘There was a massacre,’ tweeted state governor Liborio Guarulla, adding that at least 37 inmates had been killed during clashes with soldiers and jailers. … ‘The government went in to try to regain control of the jail. The prisoners resisted,’ city council member Jose Mejias said in a separate interview.” (08/16/17)
