Will Moore sanctimony prevail again in Alabama?

Source: Authority!
by Timothy J Taylor

“[Roy] Moore was Alabama’s Chief Justice for three years but was forced off the court in 2003 by a unanimous 9-member judicial ethics panel after he defied a federal court order to remove a 2.6 ton stone monument of the Ten Commandments he had commissioned himself and placed at the courthouse. It constituted a government endorsement of religion in violation the federal Constitution First Amendment Establishment Clause. … by some miracle of miracles in 2015, he won an election to reclaim his former job as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. … Then he defied the United States Supreme Court. … He wasn’t listening. He wasn’t learning. So another Alabama judicial ethics panel booted him off the Court again. That’s why he’s unfit to be a judge, and that’s why alone, without any other bad deeds in his past, he’s unfit to be a U.S. Senator.” (11/14/17)

Fifth woman accuses Moore of ephebophilic assault; Republicans threaten expulsion

Source: National Public Radio [US state media]

“Another woman has charged Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore of sexually assaulting her. In an emotional news conference, Beverly Young Nelson said Moore groped her and tried to force her head onto his crotch in his car behind the restaurant where the then 16 year old worked. Nelson, appearing alongside attorney Gloria Allred, said the incident occurred in 1977. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday, ‘I believe the women’ and called on Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore of Alabama to ‘step aside.’ … The National Republican Senatorial Committee has pulled out of a joint fundraising agreement with Moore, and the list of prominent Republicans opposing Moore’s candidacy has steadily grown. … NRSC Chairman Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., issued a statement … ‘If [Moore] refuses to withdraw and wins, the Senate should vote to expel him, because he does not meet the ethical and moral requirements of the United States Senate.'” (11/13/17)

Opt out of the lesser of two evils

Source: National Review
by Michael Brendan Dougherty

“Every social conservative who supports Moore is increasing the cynicism of American society and justifying widespread skepticism about the sincerity of Christian belief among conservatives. People are reminded frequently that Christian conservatives once demanded that Bill Clinton resign in shame for carrying on an affair with a White House intern. Now some of those supposedly godly men, or their sons, defend Moore’s predation of teenaged girls on the grounds that even a child predator is better than a Democrat. This instrumentalism will eventually make it impossible for social conservatives to defend any of their preferred policies. … Choosing the lesser of two evils is a fantastic way to prepare yourself to do worse and worse evils. And following it to the end is a bitter fate indeed.” (11/13/17)

Election 2017: The Moore you know …

Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

“It’s hard to be objective about Roy Moore. Ever since his days as circuit judge of Etowah County, Alabama, he’s been a hero to religious conservatives and the bane of civil libertarians. The former powered his two elections to the office of Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, on his promise to ‘return God to our public life and restore the moral foundation of our law.’ The latter effected his two removals from that office over his insistence that his religious beliefs trump the law (including the US Constitution). That Moore is one of America’s most controversial political figures shouldn’t distract us from the most obvious and important question concerning the latest controversy: Did he, as alleged in a Washington Post expose, engage in sexual activities with a 14-year-old girl (and other minors) while he was a thirty-something prosecutor?”

Roy Moore: Sexual predator?

by Rod Dreher

“If the allegations against Moore are true, obviously he should withdraw from the race. Doesn’t sound like he would — and he might even win. In that event, Democrats will make him the GOP poster child in the 2018 election, and the GOP will deserve it. Here’s what I don’t get: the eagerness of so many conservatives at this point to double down on defending Moore — this, versus the ‘wait and see’ stance. We already know that credible allegations of sexual predation don’t matter to most Republican voters. … if Alabama Republican voters put Roy Moore in office, and the Senate seats him, it’s going to be a massacre for Republicans on Election Day 2018. But: if Moore is elected and the Senate refuses to seat him, think about how vicious the Trumpist base will be in seeking retribution.” (11/10/17)

DC: Moore makes nice with GOP senators he sparred against before

Source: New York Daily News

“Roy Moore lunched with the Senate Republican establishment he has repeatedly derided. The Alabama Senate candidate and former jurist joined Vice President Mike Pence and GOP senators at their weekly, closed-door policy luncheon on Tuesday. Republicans, who had mostly favored appointed Sen. Luther Strange, have endorsed Moore as they look ahead to the Dec. 12 special election to fill the seat held for years by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. merging from the luncheon, Moore faced questions from reporters about past statements on religion and his criticism of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Moore has said Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., should not be allowed to serve in Congress because he’s a Muslim.” (10/31/17)

AL: Paul endorses Christian sharia-ist Roy Moore in Senate race

Source: The Hill

“Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Tuesday endorsed former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore in his race for the Senate, Moore’s campaign announced. ‘I am honored to receive the support and endorsement of Senator Rand Paul, for whom I have great admiration and respect as fellow defender of our conservative principles,’ Moore said of the endorsement. … ‘Judge Roy Moore has spent a lifetime defending and standing up for the Constitution while fighting for the people of Alabama. We need more people in Washington, D.C. that will stand on principle and defend the Constitution,’ Paul said in a statement.” [editor’s note: So much for “libertarian-ish” – TLK] (10/17/17)

Undisclosed deal guaranteed Roy Moore $180,000 a year for part-time work at charity

Source: Washington Post

“Former Alabama judge Roy Moore, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, once said publicly that he did not take a ‘regular salary’ from the small charity he founded to promote Christian values because he did not want to be a financial burden. But privately, Moore had arranged to receive a salary of $180,000 a year for part-time work at the Foundation for Moral Law, internal charity documents show. He collected more than $1 million as president from 2007 to 2012, compensation that far surpassed what the group disclosed in its public tax filings most of those years. … A Washington Post review of public and internal charity documents found that errors and gaps in the group’s federal tax filings obscured until now the compensation paid to Moore, whose defeat last month of President Trump’s choice for Republican nominee in the Senate race will likely embolden far-right challengers to the party’s mainstream incumbents.” (10/11/17)

Roy Moore would make America Saudi Arabia again

Source: Reason
by Shikha Dalmia

“God certainly has a great sense of irony. In the same week that Saudi Arabia, an Islamic theocracy, took a small step out of the 18th Century byeasing its ban on female driving, America took a step back into that century by handing a win in the Alabama U.S. Senate Republican primary to Roy Moore, a vehement proponent of a Christian theocracy on U.S. soil. Sadly, it seems, faith in American-style liberalism is dimming in America just as it is penetrating the remaining bastions of illiberalism in the world. Moore calls Islam a ‘fake religion’ while spreading the fake news that unnamed Christian communities in Illinois and Indiana are being forced to live under Islamic law or sharia. But why he would find sharia all that troubling is unclear given that his Christianity is its spiritual twin.” (10/04/17)

AL: Moore crushes Strange in US Senate primary

Source: Politico

“Republican challenger Roy Moore defeated Sen. Luther Strange in Alabama’s Senate primary Tuesday night, riding a wave of rural support over the incumbent backed by President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Moore, a former state Supreme Court justice, had 55 percent of the vote to Strange’s 45 percent with 95 percent of precincts reporting. Strange, who was appointed to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ old seat earlier this year, is the first senator to lose a primary since Indiana Republican Richard Lugar was defeated in 2012.” [editor’s note: America — “Trump as president would sure be hard to top in the annals of American electoral stupidity.” Alabama — “Hold my beer.” – TLK] (09/27/17)
